PVD optimised components in practical use
The solution of wear problems affecting aircraft components begins with
the exact analysis of mating surfaces, including all the participating
ambient influences. This provides insight into the frictional and wear
mechanisms that have occurred and caused the failure of a component.
Within the portfolio of BALINIT® hard coatings with various properties, there is often one treatment of the component surface that provides the most efficient solution.
To enhance comfort of passengers, air conditioning systems adjust the
intake air to breathable pressure, temperature, flow and humidity
levels. Under these circumstances, valves that control the outside air
inlet can be subject to corrosion and tribo-oxidation (fretting
corrosion) of the valve lifter. Coating the high-alloy steel with BALINIT® CNI (CrN) or BALINIT® A
(TiN) reduces the coefficient of friction and significantly improves
corrosion protection. Airbus, a Oerlikon Balzers Coating customer, values the precise
control function of the valves and their prolonged fitness for function
as compared to uncoated components.
