Correct design for coating
Start your collaboration with us while you are still in the development
and design phase. In this way, component design, manufacturing process,
choice of material and heat treatment can be optimally harmonised with
a highly effective coating. Joint consideration of the system and the
respective contributions of expertise lead to innovative solutions and
short development times.
Design suitability for components

For coating, the components are fastened to a fixture. The surface
covered by the fixture remains uncoated. This must be taken into
account. |

Surfaces that should not be coated are covered by a mechanical mask. An
optimised component design should allow for this - masking with a
paste, as for nitriding, is not possible. |

Components that are already screwed, glued or pressed together cannot
be coated; the joint surfaces cannot be adequately cleaned and will
outgas in vacuum. |

Welded components must be stress-relief annealed before coating. |
| |
Components with blind holes can be coated but the hole depth must not be greater than the diameter. |
Optimum interaction of tool design and coating
Coating permits significantly higher machine performance. Cutting
tools, in particular, are most successful if their geometry is adapted
to the changed service conditions.

For fastening the tools to the fixture, holes, threads or a surface must be available that can remain uncoated. |

Tools with inside surfaces (bore holes-, threads, slots) can be coated
but the depth of such features should not exceed their width. |

Cooling channels must be open and clean. |

Geometry, dimensions and weight
In addition to suitability of design, geometry and weight must also be
taken into account. The maximum coatable parts dimensions and the
maximum parts weight are determined by the choice of coating.
Maximum values are about 3000 kg with a diameter of 700 mm and a length
of 1500 or 1000 mm.
