this process, an arc with a diameter of just a few microns is run over
the solid, metallic coating material, causing it to evaporate. Because
of the high currents and power densities used, the evaporated material
is almost totally ionised and forms a high-energy plasma.
The metal ions combine with the reactive gas that is introduced into
the chamber and strike the tools or components to be coated with high
energy. They are deposited as a thin and highly adherent coating.
